Business Development & Partnerships for Circularity
After exploring the reuse of EV & Energy Storage Modules into a secondary application, we started a fractional role as Business Development lead in France, NL for Nowos' primary battery repair activity. In this opportunity, we also explored the possibilities for enabling more circularity within the battery supply chain. This fractional role includes:
- Pilot tests with key partners for the reuse of cells
- Discussing sustainability objectives with potential clients
- Client account management
- New customer research and outreach
- Sales processes & CRM management
- Onboarding of new sales team members
- Development of marketing material
- ESG & circularity impact assessments and calculations for due diligence

What do we learn from the battery repair industry?
Battery repair is a vital step in the circular battery value chain. A study published in the journal Batteries indicates that end-of-life lithium-ion batteries sent to recycling typically have about 75–80% of their capacity remaining, making them suitable for second-life applications. Recycling often means that the battery components are taken apart, and cells crushed to turn into black mass. There are important steps before that process that should be taken into account to prolong the life of products, their batteries and the material mined for its first application. That's where repair, rework (remanufacturing) and reuse are essential.
Regulations in Europe, for example, mandate that by 2026, 65% of the mass of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries must be recycled, rising to 70% by 2031. Additionally, by 2028, the industry must recover 90% of the cobalt, copper, and nickel from these batteries, along with 50% of the lithium, which will increase to 95% and 80%, respectively, by 2032.
Thanks to Nowos' repair activity, batteries that are otherwise sent to recycling will have their life extended. Nowos calculates that 82% of batteries they handle for repair and rework are successfully repaired. 18% cannot be repaired, often due to deep discharge or oxydation. These remaining batteries are then sent for reuse of recycling. Further along this route, critical raw materials are extracted and recirculated into the market.
